Further Processing

At all our timber sites we are able to offer further processing of the raw timber.  James Latham have been involved in many unique projects where the knowledge and professionalism of the timber teams has been used to great effect.

MACHINING

Timbers can be supplied to profile, the cost dependant on quantity and the complexity of the moulding.  Most profiles can be ready within 7 to 10 days from order.  Mouldings can be matched if you have a sample, or produced from a detailed drawing.

Over the years, Lathams have developed a unique range of claddings which are referred to as Lathamclad.

This denotes most suitable pinning for fixing.  Illustrations are not to scale.

Lathamclad is usually supplied in random lengths, but can be cross-cut to exact lengths within the limits of the timber selected.  Above these limits, and for large areas, the random lengths can be end matched.

Lathamclad is designed for use as wall and ceiling panelling, fascias, counter fronts, bank and shopfittings.  All species offered are suitable for interior application.  Many timbers can also be used externally for cladding, curtain walling, canopy soffits etc.

Composition and manufacture - Natural solid timber, kiln dried to specification and machined to profile.  Profiles A, C, D, E, G, H and O are machine-sanded during manufacture, other profiles should be sanded after fixing.  End matching and cross-cutting to exact lengths can be carried out at extra cost.

Storage - Care should be taken when Lathamclad is stored before fixing.  It is essential that it is piled flat in a dry undercover store and, where possible, in conditions of temperature and humidity similar to those in its intended location.

Fixing - Lathamclad is designed for secret fixing as indicated and is normally pinned to battens or joists.  Fixing pins should be rustproof and their lengths should be at least twice the thickness of the board.  Supports should be at centres in accordance with normal building practice.  Lathamclad should not be fixed to new brickwork, etc, until it is thoroughly dry and all heating tests have been completed.  It is good practice to seal the reverse of the boards to prevent the absorption of moisture.

Surface Treatment - Lathamclad will accept most good quality, proprietary wood finishes, which should be applied according to the makers decision.  Sections showing a flat face profile are sanded ready for polishing at no extra charge.

Maintenance - Lathamclad requires the minimum of maintenance when used for internal applications.  External surfaces should be revarnished every 1 to 2 years or treated with water-repellent preservative stain every 2 to 4 years, depending on the type of timber.

Trims, skirting's, architraves, handrails and flooring can be supplied in similar or contrasting timber.

We can also machine any flooring section in hardwood or softwood and end matching can be offered.  Please also see our flooring section where we have a good range of prefinished solid hardwood flooring and engineered flooring.

COMPONENTS

At some of our sites we have been able to source and supply timber components for our customers.  This can be anything from a rough sawn strip to a fully machined section, cut to shape and pre-drilled.  We would welcome the opportunity to work with you on any components you require.

TREATMENT PROCESSES

At all our timber sites we can arrange for timber to be treated for durability, depending on the specie, which will determine what treatment is required.  Internal and external treatments can be offered.

Timber can also be fire treated to either Class 1 or Class 0.  It is important to consider the final finish of the timber and be aware that the treatment can often darken the appearance of the timber.  Treatment can often take up to 4/6 weeks from date of order.  More accurate times can be given where an enquiry is made.

KILN DRYING

Most timber will come in pre-kiln dried, mostly at average moisture content of 12/14%.  However, if you require further kilning to a lower moisture content this can be organised, dependant on quantity and the availability of kiln space.
